Great information! I am always looking for ways to promote my website that doesn’t break the bank. These are practical ideas that many of us out here might not think about! Thanks!

Hi Julie,
Free is always good! Yes, there are many free online resources available to us. You know, I was just browsing your website. Have you ever thought of collecting a handful of your recipes to make an eCookbook (with secret bonus recipes unavailable online) and sell on your website? You could collect all the money through PayPal. Good luck!

What is your opinion on using link farming? I heard it could get you black listed from google.
Chris Metzner
Thanks for the question Ted. Yes, link farming is bad. It will get your website shut down pretty quickly. People practice this frowned upon method of gaining inbound links to their site, all in hopes of gaining higher rankings with Google. Luckily Google’s mission to keep the Internet clear of irrelevant websites and content helps weed those sites out for us. Just goes to show you what’s important if you’re a website designer, developer or owner. Always provide your readers fresh and original content, and Google will naturally reward you!

What do you recommend for SEO for a blog like mine? http://julieshad.com/home_theater_pc/ When I started on my project to make a home theater/office pc combination, I didn’t find much, so I think it’s fairly unique. So if I use those words in the title, will that be enough? Thanks Chris! For my hiking pages, I placed a link on a wiki page with permission of a wiki owner, and it really helped with visibility, but I’m not able to do that with this page.

Looks like you’re off to a good start! If want to dress it up visually, head to ThemeForest.com for some amazing themes.
Here are a couple of tips for optimizing your blog so you can get top Google search results all by yourself:
1) Do your keyword research. You want something with high search volume, but with low search results. If you use your main keyword phrase throughout your website, you’ll naturally rank on Google. Use that same phrase (and close variations so the site looks natural) in your titles and H1, H2 and H3 tags.
If your main keyword phrase for this blog is “home theater pc” try not to target more than 10 variations of your main keyword phrase throughout your blog entries (ie home theater computer, home theater furniture, home theater design, home theater room design, ultimate home theater pc, etc). Use 2 or 3 for best results.

2) Put the keywords within your Head tags on each page of your website. Add this below the *title* tags:
*meta name=”description” content=”YOUR KEYWORDS WRITTEN LIKE A SENTENCE”/*
*meta name=”keywords” content=”ALL YOUR KEYWORDS AND KEYWORD PRASES SEPARATED BY COMMAS”/*
NOTE: Replace the “*” in my comment earlier, with “<“.
3) Make sure to promote your website at other relevant websites. This is called backlinking. Just like how you posted the link on this blog, do the same at other forums and blogs so people can access your website (in the written content as well as your signature). Use your keyword in the content you write and make those links back to your blog. Essentially, you’re getting your links in front of people interested in the same topic.
4) Post videos on YouTube and Vimeo. Talk about your blog’s content, and be sure to use your keywords in the video title, description and tags.
There are many ways to advertise your website, there are some of the basics. Hope this helps!
